How to Write a Resume With AI (Without It Sounding Like AI)

AI resume builders have become common enough that hiring managers notice the templates. The give-away isn't the design — it's the language. "Results-driven professional with a proven track record of delivering impactful outcomes in fast-paced environments" appears on thousands of AI-generated resumes. It says nothing specific, and recruiters have learned to read past it.

Using AI to write your resume is fine. Using AI output without editing it is not. Here's how to use the tools in a way that actually produces something worth submitting.

What AI does well on resumes

AI resume builders are excellent at structure. They know what sections to include, in what order, and how to format them correctly for ATS (Applicant Tracking System) parsing. They understand that work experience should lead with action verbs, that bullet points should describe achievements not just responsibilities, and that the summary section should be role-specific rather than generic.

They're also good at generating options. Stuck on how to phrase a responsibility? Ask AI for five different ways to describe it and pick the one that most accurately captures what you did. This is faster and often produces better language than staring at a blank line.

What you must add yourself

Numbers. Specific metrics. AI can write "Improved sales performance" — only you can turn that into "Grew quarterly revenue by 34% through targeted account expansion, closing 12 new enterprise contracts in 9 months." The first is generic. The second is a credential. ATS systems and recruiters both respond better to specifics.

Also: the accurate picture of what you actually did versus what the job title suggests you did. AI will generate a description of what your job title usually involves. You need to correct or add the things that were specific to your role, your team, or your achievements.

ATS optimisation

Most mid-to-large companies screen resumes through ATS software before a human sees them. ATS systems scan for keywords from the job posting. If those keywords aren't on your resume, you may not make it to the human review stage regardless of how qualified you are.

The tactic: read the job description carefully, identify the key skills and phrases used, and make sure your resume uses the same language where it's accurate. Don't fabricate skills — but do use their terminology when describing skills you genuinely have. "Project management" and "managing projects" might mean the same thing to a human, but only one will match the ATS keyword.

Format matters more than design

A simple, clean resume format outperforms a designed one in most contexts because ATS systems parse simple layouts better. Columns, tables, text boxes, and graphics confuse many parsers. One column, clear section headers, consistent formatting. Save the designed version for roles where design itself is being evaluated (creative roles where a creative resume demonstrates the skill).
